IDENTITY??????

MOST ARTIST ARGUE THAT ART HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT IDENTITY. THE LAST 3RD OF THE 20TH CENTURY WAS USED AS A WAY BY ARTISTS TO EXPRESS/CELEBRATE THEIR IDENTITY. ART IS SUPPOSED TO BE OPEN AND FREE. NO ONE CAN REALLY SAY ART IS NOT ART. IF THE ARTISTS SEES THE PIECE AS ART, AND A WAY FORT HEM TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES, THEN IT IS ART. NO ONE HAS THE ABILITY TO STATE THE FACT THAT ART IS NOT ART. THEY COULD ONLY STATE THEIR OPINION.
SOEMTIMES WE MAY CHOOSE OUR IDENTITY, BUT OFTEN IT IS PUT ONTO US BY SOCIETY AND OUR CULTURE. THE EXAMPLE GLENN USED WAS IF THE ECONOMY IS BAD, THEN PEOPLE WILL FEEL STRESSED. THIS MAY CHANGE WHO YOU ARE AND YOUR IDENTITY.

I drew Dumbo for the day we were not in class simply because Glenn asked us to draw a picture or do something artistic.. I figureed I would draw Dumbo because growing up this was my nickname in my family for me.. So I figured why not give it a shot at drawing him even though I am not artistic at all :)

This is a painting by Jean-Honorore Fragonard. His work is amazing , well at least to me. Although when he was a painter in the  17th-18th centuries his work was not appreciated. This I don’t understand because it just looks so beautiful to me. It is apparent that the lady Is holding a musical instrument and on some clouds. So maybe this is what heaven is supposed to be like. Or maybe this was the ladies real passion: music. And just maybe when that person played the music it was so beautiful that it made it seem dreamy. Or maybe this lady and the child where jus fragments of his imagination.

Hey its me!!

I did not get this artist’s name, but I thought this picture was interesting well for one it kind of reminded me of the titanic. But the other reason is most pictures back then were of naked women with pubic hair. This lady had none. I really wonder why because I remember it was a paintinf=g from like the 18th or 19th century. And she looks kind of pregnant. Maybe that’s why she is holding her belly?

2-2-11 Years and Years of Paint

We started off talking about the art of before mankind. The Australopithecus a species before us. They carried the pebble 20 miles to their cave. The pebble looks like a face was carved into it, but in reality it was the water that created it.
Then we looked at beyond, which had a picture that was placed on a spaceship. It had simple lining with stars, the sun and numbers.
We followed that with talking about Goth. This was the age of the cathedral. some parts of them were burned and rebuilt. But the real controversy was the glass windows.
Renaissance precursors we looked at the  images of Jan Van Eyck called the Madonna and the Child and The Arnolfini Portrait

High Renaissance: That time periods artists were some of the most famous of all time including Micheal Angelo, Leanardo and Raphael
 Pieta by Michelangelo

Baroque is an excessive drama filled area. With the artist of Bernini who sculpted David, He tried to own it since Micheal Angelo had already done this. This area also had the Cornaro Chapel. Behind the altar is “Ecstasy” Which is St Teresa of Avilla.

Lastly is the Rococco period which is even more excessive and drama filled. This area consisted of “The Swing”, Reynold Siddons and Marie Antoinette.

* All and all This skim through gave me the gist of the painting area through out history. It was fast, but yet interesting. I would have added more but my computer would not let me open Freemind, So i had to go off my notes and google some pictures. But i believe i got the gist of the history of painting. I would have to say i though tit was interesting and fun to learn about all these different types of painters and the way time has evolved the paintings.

Andy Warhol, 1928-1987

Andy Warhol was born as Andrew Warhola. After he graduated high school and then moved on to college he changed his name and dropped the “a” from his last name. Once he graduated from college he moved to New York. This is where he began his work as a Commercial Artist. He began to become well-known for his ink drawings of shoes.
He was recognized by the Art Directors Club. He soon began publishing work for big magazines such and Vogue and The New Yorker. While he was doing this he was also created window paintings in some of the high-end companies.
“Art is what you can get away with.”
After exhibiting his art in art galleries, he moved to His own “Factory”. This is when he started his screen prints. He painted Coca Cola bottles, Cambells Soup Cans, Marilyn Monroe, Micheal Jackson and Elvis Presley. When he was asked why paint the Cambells Soup  Can, He replied“I wanted to paint nothing. I was looking for something that was the essence of nothing, and that was it”.

“I like to be the right thing in the wrong place and the wrong thing in the right place.Being the right thing in the wrong place and the wrong thing in the right place is worth it because something interesting always happens.”
He then began working in production making films. He had many films most of them were underground films. Some of these films were, Blow Job, Sleep, and Empire. His next film called the ” Chelsea Girls”, was the first underground movie to make it to the big screens.Warhol made around 600 Films and 2500 videos. 500 of these films were of Warhol’s friends, and associates that he seen as “Stars”. They were only 4 minutes long. After his escapade in the film making industry, He continued making sculptures. This is the time when he also began to become more interested performance and music.
He then almost died from a fatal gun shot wound from Valerie Solano, A feminist author. This forever changed the artist. He began to record ever action leading to around 3,400 audio tapes. Some of these tapes were published in the ” Warhol Diaries”.
This did not slow him down however. He than began to intersect all areas of art. He did the cover of Grammy winning covers of the Rolling Stones, and appeared on the ” Love Boat” Television shoe. He signed with a modeling agency, made short films for “Saturday Night Live”, He also has his own T.V. shoes on MTV called Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes and Andy Warhol’s T.V. He also co owned a magazine called, Interview Magazine.
Unfortunately he died of a gallbladder operation. But his work will live on forever. Not only did he help the pop art but his quotes will live on forever.
”In the future everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.”
He just wanted to help new artists and do as much as he could do in his life, by expressing himself through is colorful abstracted art. They made an Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburg in 1989 to show his wonderful art and let his legacy live on.
”Business art is the step that comes after Art. I started as a commercial artist, and I want to finish as a business artist.”

Graffiti

Graffiti is to me one of the greatest kinds of art. I think it is so beautiful when people can express themselves through such an artistic work. I think graffiti has gone out of context when it comes to gangs tagging and other gangs tagging on top of the others tags. However i do commend them for their not giving a crap attitude, for instance if a gang member sees a spot they would like to graffiti on they just go and do it. They don’t worry whether or not they will get arrested or anything like that. Watching the movie really opened my eyes to the amounts of graffiti everywhere. I grew up with all my friends doing it. They would make some of the radiest things. When i seen the dutch money it tripped me out on the colors and the amount of art work on it. Where as our money is just presidents and LAME old stuff!! No one looks at our money and say wow this is beautiful.. Well at least I don’t! In most graffiti art it isn’t just paintings of pretty stuff, the art actually says something about the individual who painted it and they tend to use strange shapes, It gives the painters individual status. I agree with some of the artists complaining about the billboards. They are so worthless I would much rather see the art and someone expressing themselves. Also in Africa graffiti started as a political thing, to STOP violence, but it was seen as a political crime, which in most areas it is a crime. I wish this wasnt a crime, people should be able to express themselves as long as they are not doing it on people’s private property.

My refelections of Jan 24th lecture

Are we ever totally present? Are we ever totally awake?
This quote really made me think! At first i thought hmm that doesn’t make sense, but I kept thinking about it. I can relate to that quote because i have always wondered, is this really there is to it? To what? To life my life.. It made me think are things really what them seem to be. Is a painting just a painting or do they have some kind of significance to the artist and possibly myself or others. For example the pictures of the paintings in the caves have so much more meaning then just what they seem. To me at least. To me it tells a story of life and how it was lived back then. What those people seen as important. They seem to value animals and life and these days no one values those things. Most value T.V or their cell phone.
